The Staff is one of the common weapon types in the Disgaea series. The primary weapon of Magic users such as Mages, Healers and Skulls, Staves are also unique among the weapons.

Unlike the other weapons, they do not have inherent abilities that can be learned. Increasing a character's Weapon Mastery with the Staff instead increases the range and power of spells cast. Staves tend to increase a character's Intelligence stat, rather than Attack, although physical attacks with the staff are still based on the attack stat. In Disgaea D2, physical attacks with a Staff now use the INT stat for Damage.

Disgaea: Hour of DarknessEdit

"Staffs are weapons that can boost the power of your magic. There is nothing special about doing normal attacks with a staff, and there are no Special Techniques to learn, either. But, you can increase the range and area of effect of your magic by improving your Weapon Mastery of staffs. The experience you have earned casting spells will also affect the range and area of effect of your magic. Staffs are most effective when used by characters specializing in magic."
   —Longinus

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness: The Staff is a common weapon, often the residence of Teacher Specialists. Flonne's starter weapon is a Staff. Staves are not intended for use as melee weapons, but rather, to be held by Mages, Skulls, and frequently Female Healer (Disgaea)Healers, to increase the range of their spells.

Disgaea 2: Cursed MemoriesEdit

"The staff is a weapon that bolsters magic. The staff isn't really effective as a weapon and it doesn't have any skills that you can learn with weapon mastery. But! Weapon mastery will increase the use of magic, and guess what!? As you increase weapon mastery of the staff, the range of the magic spell will increase as well!! Then you can attack multiple enemies from a distance, or heal your group members, and gain more of an advantage in battle. If you're going to make a character mainly use magic, it is best to equip them with a staff. Train up hard and you can defeat all enemies without even coming close to them."
   —Adell's Father

Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories: Staves are the 'odd weapon out'. They do not have any skills, nor do they provide any bonus to ATK. Instead, staves focus on increasing a character's magical potency and Intelligence. Simply put, the more levels a character has in staves, the more powerful, longer range, and larger area coverage his/her spell gains. Some classes like Geomancers and Magicians benefit from having a staff all the time, while others like Healers and Magic Knights only need one when they are casting spells.

Disgaea 3: Absence of JusticeEdit

"A Staff is a weapon used to strengthen magic power. A Staff doesn't have much use as a weapon, and there are no unique weapon skills either. Basically, it is equipped on characters who mainly use Magic to fight. Attack power (ATK) will affect a normal attack's damage. By equipping a Staff, intelligence (INT) will be increased, and the magic's range of effect will become larger by 1 panel. In order to power up the Magic itself, please use the Evility Research Center."
   —Zommie V

The Staff returns as a weapon type in Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice. Like always, they have no set skills of their own and basically only usable in a mage's hands. No noteworthy characters use Staves in this game. Staves increase Magic range by 1.

Disgaea 4: A Promise UnforgottenEdit

"A Staff is a weapon used to strengthen magic power. A Staff doesn't have much use as a weapon, and it has no unique Weapon Skills either. Basically, it is equipped on characters who mainly use Magic to fight. Attack power (ATK) will affect a normal attack's damage. By equipping a Staff, intelligence (INT) will be increased, and the magic's range of effect will become larger by 1 panel. In order to power up the Magic itself, please use the Evility Shop."
   —Zommie, Jr.

In Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten, Staves return, retaining the same properties as before. Flonne and Emizel are the only unique characters who uses staves (Raspberyl uses a monster weapon despite being INT based). Vulcanus can also use staves. Like in Disgaea 3, magic range is increased by one when equipping a staff.

Disgaea 5: Alliance of VengeanceEdit

"Staves are weapons that strengthen magic-using abilities. For the most part, Staves are only good for characters who use magic. They mainly increase INT, so you should attack with magic, rather than using normal attacks. Unlike the other weapons, Staves don't have weapon skills. Simply put, Staves should only be equipped by magic users."
