Staff Attack

Spell animation with Staff.

The Staff is a type of Weapon in the Disgaea series. They increase the INT stat, and rather than learning exclusive skills they improve the effect of Spells. Despite specializing in INT, their normal attacks still depend on the ATK stat.

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness[]

"Staffs are weapons that can boost the power of your magic. There is nothing special about doing normal attacks with a staff, and there are no Special Techniques to learn, either. But, you can increase the range and area of effect of your magic by improving your Weapon Mastery of staffs. The experience you have earned casting spells will also affect the range and area of effect of your magic. Staffs are most effective when used by characters specializing in magic."
   —Longinus

Increasing Staff Mastery increases the power of all magical skills, as well as the range and AoE of Spells. Flonne specializes in Staves, as well as the Mage, Skull, Male Healer, Female Healer, and Rune Knight classes.

Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories[]

"The staff is a weapon that bolsters magic. The staff isn't really effective as a weapon and it doesn't have any skills that you can learn with weapon mastery. But! Weapon mastery will increase the use of magic, and guess what!? As you increase weapon mastery of the staff, the range of the magic spell will increase as well!! Then you can attack multiple enemies from a distance, or heal your group members, and gain more of an advantage in battle. If you're going to make a character mainly use magic, it is best to equip them with a staff. Train up hard and you can defeat all enemies without even coming close to them."
   —Adell's Father

Increasing Staff Mastery increases the power, range and AoE of Spells. The Magician, Witch, Cleric, Wiseman and Magic Knight classes specialize in Staves.

Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice[]

"A Staff is a weapon used to strengthen magic power. A Staff doesn't have much use as a weapon, and there are no unique weapon skills either. Basically, it is equipped on characters who mainly use Magic to fight. Attack power (ATK) will affect a normal attack's damage. By equipping a Staff, intelligence (INT) will be increased, and the magic's range of effect will become larger by 1 panel. In order to power up the Magic itself, please use the Evility Research Center."
   —Zommie V

From this game onwards, having a Staff equipped increases Spell range by 1. Mao specializes in Staves, as well as the Magician, Witch, Clergy, Cleric, Wiseman, Magic Knight and Sorcerer classes.

Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten[]

"A Staff is a weapon used to strengthen magic power. A Staff doesn't have much use as a weapon, and it has no unique Weapon Skills either. Basically, it is equipped on characters who mainly use Magic to fight. Attack power (ATK) will affect a normal attack's damage. By equipping a Staff, intelligence (INT) will be increased, and the magic's range of effect will become larger by 1 panel. In order to power up the Magic itself, please use the Evility Shop."

Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance[]

"Staves are weapons that strengthen magic-using abilities. For the most part, Staves are only good for characters who use magic. They mainly increase INT, so you should attack with magic, rather than using normal attacks. Unlike the other weapons, Staves don't have weapon skills. Simply put, Staves should only be equipped by magic users."
   —Gen, the Know-It-All Guy
