Spear Attack

Attack animation with Spear.

The Spear is a type of Weapon in the Disgaea series. They present a good amount of defensive utility, with a normal attack range of 2, increased DEF, and skills that hit all around the user. Many of their skills also move the user, facilitating getting into and out of combat.

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness[]

"The spear is another popular weapon. While normal attacks with a spear are a bit weak, you have the advantage of being able to attack from 2 panels away. The Special Techniques learned with a spear generally have a short range, but the area of effect varies. Furthermore, some techniques allow you to change your position."
   —Longinus

Unlike the rest of the franchise, Spears don't increase the user's DEF. Etna specializes in Spears, as well as the Female Warrior class.

Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories[]

"The spear is the next most popular weapon after swords. The greatest advantage of the spear is being able to attack someone 2 spaces away from you. Since you can attack away from the enemy, you can team attack and combo from the same space. The spear can also block attacks from the front, which is another trait of the spear. (*Blocks only occur from frontal attack) Another merit of the spear is that your defense (DEF) also increases. Skills that you can learn with spear weapon mastery may change your position after using the skill. The spear is a weapon that makes battle tactic variations more plentiful."
   —Adell's Father

From this game onwards, Spears increase the user's DEF. Etna specializes in Spears, as well as the Valkyrie and Armor Knight classes.

Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice[]

"The Spear is the next easiest weapon to use, after the Sword. The greatest advantage to using a Spear is that you can attack an opponent who is two panels away. Since you can attack the enemy from a distance, it is good for doing team and combo attacks at the same time. Another merit of equipping a Spear is that it increases defense (DEF). Know that many of the Spear's unique weapon skills will move the position of the character that uses it. The Spear will give you a plethora of battle tactic variations. Please try them out."

"Spears are a little different, but still recommended for their ease of use. Their greatest feature is that they can attack from two panels away, making it harder for enemies to counter attack. Since they can attack from a distance, they can join team attacks and combos with a single Execute. They will also attack enemies between you and your target, allowing you to attack multiple enemies at once. Another feature is that equipping a Spear also increases your DEF. You should also remember that Spear Weapon Skills can hit multiple enemies at once. Spears offer a variety of ways to fight. You should try one out."
   —Gen, the Know-It-All Guy
