Extra Gain is a system that lets certain characters gain power from others. It was introduced in Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, and reappeared only in Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories and Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness.

Description[]

In games with the Extra Gain system when a character creates another one through the Dark Assembly, they become the Master of the created character (the Student).

This relationship is set permanently in the first 2 games, though Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness lets you manually adjust them.

This system allows for the Master to obtain power from their Students (contrary to what the name might suggest), gaining increased stats and learning spells from them.

Note that the terms used for the characters are different depending on the game:

  • In Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, the creator is named the "Mentor" and the created character the "Pupil."
  • In Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories, the creator is named the "Master" and the created character the "Student".
  • In Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness, creators are still "Master" and the created character the "Apprentice."

Note that the bonuses from this system are available in Disgaea 3 and Disgaea 4. However, instead of being assigned by character creation, Club Leaders (in Disgaea 3) and Evil Symbol Leaders (in Disgaea 4) take the place of Masters, with the other Club/Symbol members take the place of students.

Benefits[]

Statistics Boost[]

When a Master has Students, the Master receives a bonus to each of their stats equal to 10% of the highest of each base stat(equipment and stats boosts are ignored) amongst all their students.

For example, if the Master has these three students:

Students
Student ATK INT HIT
1 100 75 100
2 50 50 75
3 75 100 50

In this scenario, the Master would receive a bonus of 10 ATK and 10 HIT from student 1, nothing from student 2, and 10 INT from student 3.

Learning Spells[]

While a Master stands adjacent to one of their Students, the Master can use any of the Spells the Student knows, although the spells will be at level 0. If they cast a spell enough times for it to reach level 1 it'll be completely learned, letting them use it permanently without the help of the Student.

In Disgaea D2, the Student is able to learn spells from the Master as well.
