"Fist weapons are best for characters that are good at close combat. For normal attacks, there's a higher chance of activating a Team Attack, and an added number of counter attacks. A characteristic of the fist weapon is that damage depends on attack power (ATK) and speed (SPD). This means, even weak people can cover up for their attack power with speed. This is an important forte. Even if you increase ATK, if your SPD is low, you can't deal as much damage. Watch out for this. Also, many of the Fist's Weapon Skills move the opponent's position. Remember this."
—Zommie, Jr.
Fists function the same as in previous games. They often move enemies from their original position. The Bouncer class specializes in Fists, and they are considered to be the best weapon for the Ninja class. Main story characters Fenrich and Axel also specialize in Fists.

"The Sword is said to be the most common weapon. Especially for beginners, if the character's choice of weapon includes Swords, I highly suggest you equip it. A Sword's weapon skills come in handy. They vary in distance and range, so they're useful in many situations. If you're a character who's good with swords, don't hesitate to equip one."
—Zommie, Jr.
Swords appear again in Disgaea 4, but no longer cost high amounts of SP and are capable of doing good damage to multiple enemies at a time, making them one of the most common weapons used. The main character Valvatorez uses swords with maximum efficiency, although he can also use spears to a certain degree. Fuka can also use a sword, although she is better suited towards an Axe. The best sword is the Baal Sword; however, a free Baal DLC will net you the better Great Baal Horn. The weapon trainer states that the sword is a beginner's weapon and is highly recommended if you can equip it. Main story character Desco can Magichange into a sword, while Post-Game characters Laharl and Zetta also use swords.
Attacks up to three enemies 1-3 spaces away from the user.
This skill can only be unlocked/learned naturally by the DLC Medic Class and Tyrant Valvatorez. Reincarnation/Chara World is the only way for any other character to learn it.
In the PS Vita remake, A Promise Revisited, certain unique characters (Valvatorez, Zetta, Ash, Krichevskoy) can now learn Wings of Fire naturally at level 1500.
"The Spear is the next easiest weapon to use, after the Sword. The greatest advantage to using a Spear is that you can attack an opponent who is two panels away. Since you can attack the enemy from a distance, it is good for doing Team and Combo Attacks at the same time. Another merit of equipping a Spear is that it increases defense (DEF). Know that many of the Spear's unique Weapon Skills will move the position of the character that uses it. The Spear will give you a plethora of battle tactic variations. Please try them out."
—Zommie, Jr.
Spears function the same as their Disgaea 3 counterparts. They often hit enemies surrounding the user and move him/her from their original position. The Post-Game character Etna primarily uses spears. Valvatorez can also use spears, but he's better at using swords.

"The Bow is a long range weapon that can attack enemies that are far away. Attack power (ATK}) and accuracy (HIT) affect normal attacks, and can freely attack anything within a 4 panel range. Even if you raise ATK, it won't be as effective, so make sure to increase HIT as well. (Tip: Equip Glasses) The Bow has a wide range of attack. Equipping one will raise HIT, so it is fit for fighting against quick enemies. A Bow's Weapons Skills have long ranges, and you can select the area within it, making it useful for complicated maps. Like the normal attacks, the Bow's Weapon Skills apply damage based on ATK and HIT. The Bow is perfect for attacking enemies with low defense from far away, making them fight, and for increasing Combos."

Barrage Boomerang is a DLC skill obtained from downloading the DLC Medic class.
In the PS Vita remake, A Promise Revisited, Flonne (Fallen Angel) can learn (9) naturally at level 1500.
"The Gun is the weapon with the longest range. Accuracy (HIT) and speed (SPD) will affect the damage dealt from a Gun's normal attack. Be aware that even if you raise ATK, it will have no effect on the damage dealt when using a Gun. It has the longest range of all weapons, being able to attack up to 5 panels in a straight line. The Gun's Weapon Skills are, like its normal attacks, long distance. And like the normal attacks, HIT and SPD will affect the damage dealt by Skills to the enemy. It might be a good idea to equip Glasses or Shoes when equipping a Gun. Also, some unique Weapon Skills of the Gun can have the effect of lowering the opponent's SPD. Used well, you can use the tactic to stop a quick enemy's movement."
—Zommie, Jr.
Guns in this installment are, like their versions from the previous installment, split-stat weapons reliant on both HIT and SPD. However, their skill-set has been neutered compared to their predecessors. Damage-wise, they are the weakest weapons in the game, and have no native Skills beyond the Power Level of C. However, Gun skills have much longer ranges compared to Disgaea 3; half of them have ranges up to 6 panels. Vulcanus and Asagi primarily use guns, while Kurtis can Magichange into one.
"The Axe takes pride for having the greatest power of all weapons. The speed (SPD) might go down, but when it hits, the damage is huge. Another charm of the Axe is that it has a higher critical rate compared to the other weapons. The Axe's Weapon Skills have a simple distance and range limit, so it's easier to plan Combos and other tactics. There are also Skills that can decrease the target's defense (DEF), so it can become an important factor in strategy. Combine the Team Attacks and Combos to go for great amounts of damage."

"A Staff is a weapon used to strengthen magic power. A Staff doesn't have much use as a weapon, and it has no unique Weapon Skills either. Basically, it is equipped on characters who mainly use Magic to fight. Attack power (ATK) will affect a normal attack's damage. By equipping a Staff, intelligence (INT) will be increased, and the magic's range of effect will become larger by 1 panel. In order to power up the Magic itself, please use the Evility Shop."
"There are two types of characters you can befriend: Humans and Monsters. Human-type characters can equip 7 different types of weapons: Fist, Sword, Spear, Axe, Bow, Gun, and Staff. Monster-type characters can only equip Monster Weapons. There's no choice or forte for Monster Weapons, but depending on the type of weapon, the stats are different. One is for close combat types, which increase attack power (ATK) and accuracy (HIT). The other one is for magic types, which increases ATK and intelligence (INT), and also a 1 panel range for magic. Look at the monster-type character's traits and equip the weapon that is more fit for them."
