"I will be as cool as Etna, but twice as sexier!"

Help Disgaea DS grow up quickly by expanding this article into a full one, and maybe it can one day be sexier than Etna. Try asking for details on its talk page.

Disgaea DS is the second port of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness and a port of its PSP remake Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness for the Nintendo DS. On March 5th, 2008, it was announced in Weekly Famitsu Magazine that Disgaea: Prince of the Demon World and the Red Moon (魔界戦記ディスガイア 魔界の王子と赤い月, Makai Senki Disugaia Makai no Ōji to Akai Tsuki, "Netherworld Battle Chronicle Disgaea: The Prince of the Netherworld and the Red Moon") would be coming to the Nintendo DS. No additional information or screenshots were included.

On March 7th, NIS America released a statement on the U.S. release of a new edition of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness for the Nintendo DS. The game would be a port of the PSP version (Afternoon of Darkness), retaining Etna Mode and would also include multiplayer gameplay. In order to fully utilize Nintendo DS's capabilities, several key improvements would be made to the user interface and game system.

Changes from Disgaea: Hour of Darkness[]

  • All previously added content from Afternoon of Darkness is included.
  • As in all ports following the original game, Etna is voiced by Michelle Ruff instead of Amanda Winn Lee.
  • As in all ports following the original game, some songs have been removed due to licensing issues with Atlus, who localised and published the original Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, but have had no involvement with the series since. Such songs include "The Invasion from Within" by Tsunami Bomb, "One With The Stars", and the English version of "Red Moon".
  • Adell and Rozalin from Disgaea 2 and Overlord Zetta from Makai Kingdom are unlockable, as well as the Dark Assembly guide, Pleinair.
  • This version uses optional touch screen controls.
  • This version includes an unlockable Prinny Commentary, where a Prinny uses the top screen to give commentary on most of the game.
    • This feature remains, to this day, exclusive to the Nintendo DS version.
  • Some post-game content can be unlocked by earning any ending.

Limitations[]

Due to the limitations of the Nintendo DS hardware compared even to the PSP, multiple aspects of the game were downgraded or removed.

  • There is no voice acting other than the opening cutscene and Next Episode Previews.
  • The BGM has significantly reduced quality.
  • There are no vocals or lyrics in the ending songs.
  • The graphics are lower resolution.
  • The visuals of special skills has been reduced in quality.
  • Most special attacks cause the screen to black out with only the user and enemies affected being visible.
