The Bow is a weapon type in all four Disgaea games. In later installments, Bows are considerably stronger than their "Hour of Darkness" incarnations.

Disgaea: Hour of DarknessEdit

"Bows are long-range weapons that Archers specialize in. Normal attacks deal damage according to the following formula: (ATK/2) + (HIT/2) = Total Damage. The Special Techniques learned with a bow have long range and can affect single or multiple targets. However, their restrictions on the area of effect and required action space will take some time to get used to. Damage due to Special Techniques is calculated just as for normal attacks: (ATK/2) + (HIT/2) = Total Damage."
   —Longinus

The Bow in Disgaea: Hour of Darkness lacks the 'generate Treasure Chest' ability of later games, but makes up for it with an AOE Special as the second Special available. While that doesn't seem like much of a trade-off, being able to hit and possibly kill 3 enemies with a ranged weapon allows for speedier leveling at an earlier point in gameplay. Other than that, Bows are relatively similar throughout all the games (aside from the aformentioned 'being weaker' part). Bow Specials in D1 can inflict status effects.

Disgaea 2: Cursed MemoriesEdit

"The bow is a long range weapon that allows you to attack an enemy from far away. For normal attacks, attack power (ATK) and accuracy (HIT) affect the attack. Even if you raise attack power, it won't be as powerful, so remember to raise accuracy too. The bow is useful with a large attack range. When equipped, the accuracy (HIT) increases, so it's fit to fight agile enemies. Skills that you can learn with bow weapon mastery have long distance, and have effect ranges of single to multiple enemies. Skills are also affected by attack power (ATK) and accuracy (HIT). Also, bow skills may also induce abnormal effects. The best use for the bow is to have a low defense character attack from a distance to include him in combos. If the final attack is done with a bow, there's a chance to get a treasure chest."
   —Adell's Father

In Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories, Bows are ranged weapons that use Attack and Hit to calculate damage. An attack with a Bow has a 30% chance to turn an enemy into a Treasure Chest if the attack kills it. The Chest is usually at the attacker's level, its contents affected by the map's Bonus Rank.

This time, Bow users must wait till skill level 10 to get a Special that hits more than one target, and it's the X-shaped Zielregen. Bow Specials still inflict status effects, and they tend to do more damage than their D1 predecessors. Since the Gun changed in D2 to only be able to shoot in straight lines on the cardinal directions from the user (but can shoot 1-3 squares farther than the range of a Bow), Bows tend to be a good compromise between their smaller range (still 4) and the fact they can hit targets anywhere within that circle.

Disgaea 3: Absence of JusticeEdit

"The Bow is a long range weapon that can attack enemies that are far away. Attack power (ATK) and accuracy (HIT) affect normal attacks, and can freely attack anything within a 4 panel range. Even if you raise ATK, it won't be as effective, so make sure to increase HIT as well. (Tip: Equip Glasses) The Bow has a wide range of attack. Equipping one will raise HIT, so it is fit for fighting against quick enemies. A Bow's weapon skill has long range, and you can select the area within it, making it useful for complicated maps. Like the normal attacks, the Bow's weapon skill applies damage based on ATK and HIT. The Bow is perfect for attacking enemies with low defense from far away, making them fight, and for increasing combos."
   —Zommie V

In Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice, Bows function exactly the same as they do in Disgaea 2.

Putting a Bow on a character early on will pay off; flying enemies such as Mothmen are very difficult to hit for melee characters, so Bow and Gun users (as Guns reduce target-SPD) have an increased demand. The 'generate Treasure Chest' ability is still here, but Bow specials do not seem to inflict status effects as before.

Disgaea 4: A Promise UnforgottenEdit

"The Bow is a long range weapon that can attack enemies that are far away. Attack power (ATK}) and accuracy (HIT) affect normal attacks, and can freely attack anything within a 4 panel range. Even if you raise ATK, it won't be as effective, so make sure to increase HIT as well. (Tip: Equip Glasses) The Bow has a wide range of attack. Equipping one will raise HIT, so it is fit for fighting against quick enemies. A Bow's Weapons Skills have long ranges, and you can select the area within it, making it useful for complicated maps. Like the normal attacks, the Bow's Weapon Skills apply damage based on ATK and HIT. The Bow is perfect for attacking enemies with low defense from far away, making them fight, and for increasing Combos."

Disgaea 5: Alliance of VengeanceEdit

"Bows can attack enemies from a distance. Their normal attacks are based on ATK and HIT. Another characteristic of Bows is that they can attack any panel within their attack range. Make sure to raise your HIT, because only raising your ATK will not take advantage of their full potential. (Use Glasses!) Their attack range is very wide. Equipping them will increase your HIT, which is useful against speedy enemies. Bow Weapon Skills have long ranges, and can target anyone within range, making them very useful on complicated maps. Like their damage, Bow Weapon Skills are based on ATK and HIT. Bows are good for low DEF characters, and are useful for increasing your combos."
